The Origin of Loquats

Loquats are native to China, but they are best known as pipa in Chinese culture because they look very much like a mini pipa lute. As you dive into growing the loquat tree, you will find plenty of flavorful uses of the loquats—from fruits to leaves. Loquats are grown to have a thin layer of golden yellow peel and a round to pear-shaped structure. The flesh color can vary from white, yellow to orange.

Mouthwatering Loquats

It serves a sweet and juicy flavor with a hint of floral scent that is too tasty to resist. Seeds-wise, the flesh can hold as much as five brown, kidney bean size seeds within. When loquat fruits are ripe, strands of golden, pear-shaped fruits complement with some dark green leaves underneath, creating an attractive landscaping.

Moreover, the adaptable and versatile nature of loquats have unleashed our imagination on many lip-smacking possibilities. Loquats are nectarous when eaten as fresh fruits. The natural but not overly sweetness makes a delicious addition to salads, fruit cups, smoothies, pies, sauces and you name it. Just a fun fact, the Italian Nespolino is a type of wine made of loquat seeds.

A cup of loquat tea will do

Other than being succulent, the loquat leaves also make a great herbal supplement to your diet thanks to their medicinal properties—anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging.  In addition, loquat tea (Biwa Cha) gained its popularity throughout Japan for the very same reason. When you feel a bit under the weather, a cup of hot loquat tea will do the magic.

Here are five steps to prepare your very own fresh, earthy and therapeutic loquat tea. First, scrape off the fur from the back of the leaves. Second, rinse and dry the leaves on the side. Third, remove large veins and chop the rest in pieces. Fourth, let the loquat leaves simmer in boiling water for 5 minutes. Finally, turn off the heat and allow 10-15 minutes for the leaves to sit still. Enjoy the soothing and meditative sip!

Planting and Care

Seeing all those wonderful applications of the loquat trees, you may wonder if loquat trees are easy to grow. Good news is that loquat trees are self-fertile trees, just like what we have in stock at © Vegas Worms—the Fuji apple trees and Flordaking peach trees

Loquat trees adore a full sun environment and there is no place like Las Vegas, with an average of 294 sunny days annually. So just make sure the loquat tree is settled in a direct sunlight spot to keep it happy. Always refer back to the Fuji apple tree post for planting tips on watering, soil condition and more!

Despite its tolerance against drought and wind, loquat trees are weak when it comes to freezing weather. Therefore, it is vital to move them indoors or wrap cloth around the tree trunks before temperatures dip below freezing.

Weeds are another thing to watch out for because it steals soil nutrients from the baby loquat trees. Mulching would not only keep weeds, freeze and heavy rains at bay, it locks in moisture and nutrients. When it comes to mulches, there are plenty of different materials available—rubber, rock, wood and many other varieties. Find what suits your budget and aesthetics, and happy mulching.

Mulching is simple. First, prepare some landscape fabric, cut a hole and put it around your loquat tree. Then, lay and level about 2 to 3 inches of your selected mulches on the fabric. Last, keep about a 1-inch distance from the tree trunk to avoid suffocating the tree. Sprinkle light water to help the mulches settle.

Spring is the perfect time for planting and mulching, let’s start with some loquat trees today! Here is more information on loquat trees.
